2001 was an exceptionally good vintage in Rioja. Drought in the previous year meant reduced yields, resulting in incredibly intense fruit flavours in the grapes. This Reserva shows complex aromas of ripe fruit, cedar and spice, which develop into a smooth, velvety palate with powerful dark fruit flavours, hints of coffee and an almost chocolatety richness. Excellent with lamb.

An elegant concentration of ripe apricot and melon flavours balanced by a zesty undercurrant of fresh acidity.

Gavi 2006, Brico Battistina, at Majestic Wine Warehouses
A pale straw-coloured wine displaying aromas of ripe pears and hints of peach on the nose. The palate is opulent and powerful, the intense pear flavours being offset by a steely minerality characteristic of the Cortese grape used to make this wine. An excellent partner to fish.

Tagus Creek Syrah/Trincadeira 2006, Alentejano, at Majestic Wine Warehouses
From a new state of the art winery in Almeirim north east of Lisbon, this is a fine example of New World influenced winemaking. Spicy Syrah is combined with the fresh, cherry fruit of the traditional Trincadeira grape to produce a clean, fruity red. Ideal with all red meats, pasta dishes and cheese.

A medley of ripe apple and zesty lemon fruit characters create great depth and intensity. Perfect served as an aperitif.

Les Vins de Vienne is the result of a partnership between three of the Rhône’s top growers, Yves Cuilleron, Pierre Gaillard and François Villard, and their wines are regarded as representing the essence of each vineyard area. From a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, the nose is complex, with notes of ripe stone fruits and aniseed. Full and rounded in the mouth, it is well-balanced with a lingering, clean finish. Excellent with fish.
